How did you get started in photography, and what drew you to this art form?

Interview with Photographer Andreas Görß

That was so long ago, I can’t tell you exactly how it started. I wanted to capture the moments that inspired me and share them with others.

What is your preferred style or genre of photography, and why?

I think you can see that very clearly in my photos, I love black and white and architecture. My style is artistic, very precise, and special and I am in architecture only with my smartphone on the road.

How do you improve and develop your photography skills?

Over time, you refine your style, through various influences. On the one hand, your view improves. Over time, you learn to recognize situations more quickly and also to implement them more quickly. For this, however, it is necessary to photograph as much as possible. Inspiration from other artists/photographers also plays a very important role. Learning from others in daily life – that’s why I’m always open to something new without losing my path. Just as I learn something new every day – I like to pass on my knowledge.

What equipment do you use and why?

For my architectural photography, I use only my smartphone. I’ve been doing this since 2015 and all the photos on my social media channels are taken with a smartphone. For my kind of photography, it’s the perfect tool I need. The key advantage is that I always have it with me and the quality has been perfectly adequate for my photographic field for a long time.

What do you think is the most important element of a great photograph?

That is really a difficult question. I can’t answer that in one sentence. It’s very different. To name a few things that always inspire me and that are basically good photos. In no order: light and shadow, lines, symmetries, but also artistic photos, photos with a story, just to mention a few factors. There are so many influences – it starts with stepping outside the door.

What professional photographers have influenced your work?

It wouldn’t be fair to list just a few, there really are a lot of great artists/photographers who all have their credentials. And it’s not always the professional photographers that influence me, I often look to the newcomers who do really great work and have fantastic ideas.

How do you stay inspired and motivated as a photographer?

This is my hobby and I love it and it’s pure motivation. The inspiration I have already described only makes it more urgent to go out again to photograph and try new things.

How do you handle difficult shooting conditions or subjects?

I always try to find a way or a perspective that is special and not everyone sees at first glance. That is always a challenge for me. In difficult shooting conditions, for example, with unfavorable light, I try the best I can. If it doesn’t work out for me to take my photo, then it’s not meant to be and I move on.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in photography?

As I said before, to photograph as much as possible, to find your own personal style and stick to it in order to develop further. This also includes the editing style, it should not be copied from somewhere, but be something of one’s own, quasi one’s recognition value.

What do you hope your photography communicates to your audience, and why is this important to you?

Interview with Photographer Andreas Görß 4

I am happy about every acknowledgment from every individual. But also about constructive criticism – which helps me to develop further. That motivates me even more and I am very grateful for both options.

What editing software do you like to use for your finished photos?

I only use Adobe Lightroom for editing my photos. That is completely sufficient for me and I am very satisfied with it.
